Fusion Narrate 4.0 Release Notes
General - New Features and Changes
Requirement Updates
- The Fusion Narrate client now requires Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.6.2 instead of version 4.5.2. Nearly all workstations will meet this requirement. However, if the workstation does not have 4.6.2, then the Fusion Narrate client will not start. Additionally, older Fusion Narrate clients will not automatically update to 4.0 if 4.6.2 is not on the workstation.
- The Fusion Narrate client no longer supports Windows® 7, although it may still function without issues. Only Windows® 10 and Windows® 11 are officially supported.
General Shortcut-Related Features
- Made improvements to Local Shortcuts ('Use Local Shortcuts' setting is checked). The ability to record happens faster, which reduces the chances of clipping the initial audio that could cause a shortcut or command to not be recognized. Additionally, voice shortcuts and voice commands can be recognized up to a second faster. As mentioned in another Release Note, it is important for the user to hold down the microphone button or foot pedal for the entire duration of speaking the command.
- Made a change to display the following message if the microphone button or foot pedal is not held down for the entire duration of speaking a voice shortcut: "To perform a voice command, please hold down the microphone button/foot pedal, say the command, and then release the microphone button/foot pedal.". Additionally, the Ready Window will display the message "Keep button pressed" or "Keep pedal pressed" when this occurs. In prior releases, users may have quickly pressed and released the microphone button or foot pedal and still had successful recognition of a command even though this usage was not supported.
- Added the ability to import and export Fusion Narrate shortcuts from the Manage Shortcuts dialog. 'Import Fusion Narrate Shortcuts' and 'Export Shortcuts' options are available using the right-click menu on supported folders and shortcuts. One shortcut, selected shortcuts, or an entire folder of shortcuts can be exported using the right-click menu. All shortcuts exported at a given time are written to a single file. This single file can be used when importing. See help topic for more information.
- Added an option to skip importing a shortcut that has the same name as an existing shortcut. A 'Skip' button has been added to the dialog when importing shortcuts through Manage Shortcuts.
- Added new conditional shortcut logic for Active Window and Vision Click shortcuts. A new option called '<Go to Action>' has been added to the drop-down menus for 'Shortcut to perform if found' and 'Shortcut to perform if not found'. When '<Go to Action>' is selected, two additional fields for selecting the action to go to ('Action 1' by default) and the maximum number of tries ('Max 1 Loop' by default) are displayed. The second additional field is displayed if the selected action number chosen in the first additional field matches the current action # or an action # before the current action in the multi-action pane. Using this logic to go back to a previous action provides the ability to redo actions, wait longer for something to appear, or skip a step.
- Added support to convert fields within an Insert Text shortcut to ALL CAPS text when the field is toggled to All Caps font in Manage Shortcuts and the target window does not support formatting. Fields toggled to All Caps font will be inserted into the target window as [[???]] or [???] and dictated text within the field will be in ALL CAPS. In addition, if the selected text does not contain any lower case letters and at least two upper case letters, then Fusion Narrate will go into All Caps mode when starting record. When recording is stopped or a context update is performed, All Caps mode is turned off. When All Caps mode is enabled, an 'A' icon will display in the Ready Window. This is not intended for use with the Speech Window. A new setting in the 'Startup' trigger script called 'Prompt.DisableAutoAllCaps' can be used to disable most of this functionality in the event it causes a conflict. The option defaults to False.
- Added a tooltip to display which date/time format was selected and an example of that format when hovering over a date/time field inserted into an Insert Text shortcut in the Manage Shortcuts dialog. Additionally, when selecting the 'Date/Time' button, a field named 'Code' will display in the 'Insert Date/Time' dialog to show what will be inserted into the shortcut (ex. {DATETIME0}).
- Replaced the font name and size selections for an Insert Text shortcut with a single toolbar button that toggles the display of the font options when the 'Enable Formatting' option is checked in Manage Shortcuts.
- Added support for allowing characters with accent marks in the body of an Insert Text shortcut. Note that words that contain these characters cannot be selected using Select and Say voice commands.
- Changed the Press Keys shortcut editor to automatically stop recording when typing occurs in one of the fields (i.e., name, description).
- Added support to optimize the time it takes to test and execute a Browser Automation shortcut. A new checkbox, 'Run as fast as possible, applying Delay Before only when necessary' has been added to the shortcut dialog in Manage Shortcuts, and is checked by default. With this checked, the system will ignore the recorded delays and attempt to run the shortcut as quickly as deemed possible. If the shortcut does not perform as expected, this option may need to be unchecked. Fusion Narrate Extension 4.0 is required.
Advanced Insert Text Shortcuts Settings (Speech Window)
- Added a new field setting for Insert Text shortcuts called 'Disallow Blank Field.' When a user completes a Speech Window dictation, a check is performed to see if there are any blank fields configured with this setting. If so, a prompt will display indicating there is a blank field that requires a value. Once the user clicks 'OK' at the prompt, the prompt closes and the cursor is placed in the blank required field in the Speech Window.
- Added support to remove an entire paragraph or part of a paragraph from completed dictation if a field is blank or if an option box value is set to a blank value or left as '<no selection>'. The setting 'Final Text Handling For Blank Field' and 'Final Text Handling For Blank Option' have been added when configuring an Insert Text shortcut within Manage Shortcuts. The option is not available for fields if the 'Disallow Blank Field' option is checked.
- Added a new field setting for Insert Text shortcuts called 'Initial Field'. This setting specifies the initial field or option box for the cursor to be placed when the Insert Text shortcut is used within the Speech Window. This setting is useful if the desired initial field or option box is not the first one in the shortcut.
- Added support to add instructional text within an Insert Text shortcut. A '<! !>' button has been added to the dialog within Manage Shortcuts, and when clicked, a default block of text will be inserted into the text box of the shortcut in the format of: '<! instructional text here !>'. The text between the <! !> symbols can then be modified to provide instructions to the user who will be completing the dictation. This option requires the use of the Speech Window. When the dictation is completed, instructional text is omitted from the text that is inserted into the target window. Note that instructional text cannot be used within a field or option box.
- Added support to toggle between two values in an option box within an Insert Text shortcut. A 'Toggle Option' checkbox has been added to the dialog within Manage Shortcuts. When checked, simply clicking the option box within the Speech Window will toggle the value. Note that the option box cannot be configured for more than two values and the 'Multiselection' option cannot be used.
- Added support to create a link between two fields within an Insert Text shortcut. A 'Linked To:' drop-down option has been added to the field settings within Manage Shortcuts. When linked, dictating or typing a value for one field will set the same value for the linked field. This option requires the use of the Speech Window.
- Added support to automatically insert an Insert Text shortcut based on the selection of an option box from another Insert Text shortcut. A new field called 'Expansion Shortcut' has been added on the 'Option Box Item' dialog within Manage Shortcuts. This allows the Insert Text shortcut loaded into the Speech Window to dynamically change based on options the user selects. See help topic for more information.
- Added support for linking option boxes with the 'Free Text' setting checked for Insert Text shortcuts. Note that both option boxes must have 'Free Text' selected and have it in the same order in the list of values.
- Made a change to retain the size of the field/option box settings area when editing an Insert Text shortcut in Manage Shortcuts.
Speech Window
- Added a new Speech Window setting called 'Automatically start and stop recording'. When checked and the Speech Window is opened by any method (i.e. 'Open Speech Window command', executing an Insert Text Shortcut that uses Speech Window), the Fusion Narrate client will automatically start recording and when the Speech Window is closed, recording will automatically stop. This option is useful when performing an Insert Text shortcut that opens in the Speech Window as it saves the steps of using 'Start Dictation' and 'Stop Dictation'. The default for this option is False (not enabled). The option is not supported when using the Wireless Microphone.
- Added a preview button to the Speech Window that allows the user to preview the final text that will be inserted into the target window. The preview formats option box selections, removes field brackets, removes extra spaces around fields, removes text associated with blank fields and option boxes based on settings, and removes characters surrounding expansion shortcuts. It will also display formatted text, although the target window may not support it. See help topic for further details.
- Added Speech Window setting 'Display name of first Insert Text shortcut used.' When checked, the name of the first Insert Text shortcut used within the current Speech Window dictation is displayed at the top of the Speech Window. This setting is unchecked by default.
- Added support so that a space is no longer inserted for a blank field (no value is selected and 'next field' is dictated instead) when dictation is completed from the Speech Window.
- Added support to display fields and option boxes in red within the Speech Window to help identify which values need to be changed before completing. This includes fields and option boxes configured with 'Requires Modification' checked or blank fields (such as [...]) with 'Disallow Blank Field' checked. The color will be removed as soon as the field or option box is changed/populated.
- Added the ability to use various keyboard keys to navigate between values in an option box within an Insert Text shortcut. For option boxes with the 'Multiselection' setting checked, the up/down arrow keys can be used to move between the values in the drop-down, the space bar can be used to select/deselect a value, and the enter key can be used to complete an option box and move to the next field. When an option box only has a single value to choose, the enter key will complete the option and move to the next field. Note that the Speech Window setting, 'Take focus upon opening', must be checked.
- Made a change regarding the retention of the settings in a multi-selection option box in the Speech Window. If a multi-selection option box is displayed and the user clicks on another option box or into the text area, then any selection changes are not retained. To retain the settings, the 'Complete' button can be clicked or the user can say the 'Complete Dictation' command. Use of Next Field and Previous Field commands and operations also retains the selections.
- Made a change so that the '<free text>' value configured within a multi-selection option box cannot be selected in combination with other values. Additionally, selecting the '<free text>' value via voice will automatically close the option box and convert it to a field.
-
Adjusted capitalization and spacing when inserting an Insert Text shortcut with bookmarks such as [ ] that only have a single space and not 3 dots as the Fusion Narrate client expects.
Microphone Related
- Added the ability to run the Microsoft® Setup Wizard from the Microphone Setup and Tuning dialog within Fusion Narrate to possibly improve recognition accuracy when using Listen Mode and Local Shortcuts. A button called 'Microsoft Microphone Tuning' can be found on the last page of the Microphone Setup and Tuning dialog.
- Reduced the amount of time it takes to load the Microphone Setup and Tuning dialog.
- Added support for AGC (automatic gain control) processing for standard dictations. Previously, this was only performed for front-end speech dictation. Adjustments to the recording level are calculated when recording is stopped and there has been at least 20 seconds of new dictation. If a change is needed to the recording level, the next check will occur after 10 seconds of dictation. Once no more changes are needed, the time interval is reset to 20 seconds.
- Added support for the Sennheiser IMPACT SDW 5000 series headset microphones. See this help link for a list of supported microphones.
Built-in Commands
- Redesigned the Built-in Commands dialog to allow new functionality. The 'Select All'/'Unselect All' buttons have been replaced with 'Enable All as Voice Shortcuts', 'Disable All', and 'Change All Recording to Voice'. The intent is to allow users to choose which commands they want to disable, enable for voice only, or enable for voice and while recording. Icons have been added beside each command as a visual aid. As before, certain commands cannot be enabled while recording. When set to 'Disabled', a command will not be recognized.
- Added support for performing a next or previous field action while recording using a microphone button, a foot pedal, a tablet control button, or a function key assigned to the 'Next Field' or 'Previous Field' shortcut in Settings. This functionality is most applicable when using a slide switch microphone or the 'Single Click Record' operation. This feature synchronizes the action with the dictation so that pending recognized text is inserted before the next or previous field shortcut is performed. This helps to ensure that the dictated text is inserted into the expected field. This functionality is supported when using the Speech Window and external applications that support Direct Editor mode but is not supported when using the wireless microphone or when 'Fast Dictation' is disabled in the Administration Console. When the next or previous field shortcut is queued with the dictation, a prerecorded audio of "Next Field" or "Previous Field" is inserted into the audio and can be heard when played back from the Fusion Narrate client or from Review & Correct within the Admin Console. As part of this, a new 'Prompt.SpeechRecordLevelThreshold' setting has been added in the 'Startup' trigger script to determine whether to queue next and previous field actions while recording depending on the audio level. The default level is 7. If it is set to 100, then the action shouldn’t ever be queued, and the mic button presses will get performed right away and not wait for any recognized text. If it is set to 0, then the action should be queued every time regardless of pending audio.
- Added support to remain in Command Mode after dictating 'start shortcut,' then pausing, then dictating a command.
Application Integration
- Added support for Direct Editor mode when dictating into editors that use TXTextControl 27 and earlier. Support is limited to target applications that support .NET Framework 4.0 and higher. Two new settings, 'Prompt.AddInjectionExeTarget' and 'Prompt.AddInjectionControl' have been added to the 'Startup' trigger script in the Administration Console and can be configured to work with the target application.
- Added support for Direct Editor mode with Internet Explorer®-based editors using multiple frames (i.e., Greenway Prime Suite).
- Added support to direct recognized text and shortcuts to a locked application, regardless of whether it has focus. Two new options have been added to the General Settings dialog: 'Enable window lock when starting recording' and 'Always lock onto the following window when available'. The first option, if enabled, will lock the Fusion Narrate client to the current application when initiating recording until recording is stopped. The second option, when specified, will lock the Fusion Narrate client to the application with the matching window title and all dictation will be sent to it, regardless of which application is active. The options cannot be used together. There are four caveats: this feature only works when the target window supports Direct Editor mode, the feature is not supported for Citrix or RDP applications, the feature is not supported when using Microsoft Outlook, and a window title with 'Fusion Narrate - ' will override a locked window to allow for dictation into such windows as Manage Shortcuts, Manage Vocabulary, Manage Substitutions, etc. When 'Enable window lock when starting recording' is enabled, the existing options of ‘Prompt.ApplicationLockList’ and ‘Prompt.ApplicationLockListOverride’ in the 'Startup' trigger script in the Administration Console are overridden. However, these two trigger scripts work with the ‘Always lock onto the following window when available’ option.
- Added Direct Editor mode logic to trigger change events in Internet Explorer® text areas to help ensure the application recognizes the text has been changed and it is saved as expected.
Other
- Made improvements to how the Fusion Narrate client interacts with the audio input device used for recording. Instead of opening and closing the recording device each time a dictation is performed, the recording device is opened when the Narrate client launches and closed when the client is shut down. These improvements should reduce the chances of start recording delays and clipping of the initial audio. Additionally, these improvements should help remedy errors such as the following: 'UnspecifiedError calling waveInOpen' and 'Unable to open wave in device.'
- Added the ability for users to configure the action when left-clicking on the Ready Window microphone. A new setting 'Ready Window Microphone Left-Click Options:' has been added to the General Settings dialog. Users can set the value to 'Do Nothing', Toggle Listen Mode' or 'Toggle Record Mode'. This setting replaces the previous 'Use Listen Mode' option. Unless configured otherwise at the group level, new users will default to 'Toggle Record Mode'.
- Made some improvements to starting recording when Command Mode and Listen Mode are enabled to prevent the initial audio from being clipped.
- Added information to the microphone tooltip on the Ready Window to display which Function Keys are assigned to Start Dictation (record) and Shortcut Command (voice shortcuts) operations.
- Combined all user settings available from the 'Settings' menu into a new 'General Settings' sub-menu. ‘Use Speech Window,’ ‘Use Listen Mode,’ ‘Use Local Shortcuts,’ ‘Use Wireless Microphone,’ ‘Start with Windows Login,’ ‘Use Fusion Narrate CAPD Interactive’ and 'Voice Shortcut Settings’ have all been organized into sections in this new dialog.
- Changed the color of the alert messages in the Ready Window when using the dark theme to a lighter/pinkish color to improve readability.
- Made a change so the location of the Ready Window is not at the very top of the monitor display for a new user.
- Added a new option called 'Enable record ready tone' to the Function Key Settings dialogs. When checked, a double tone is played when pressing a function key configured for 'record' or 'voice command' to indicate when the dictator should start speaking. This option is unchecked by default.
- Added default values so F9 is set to 'Record' and F4 is set to 'Voice Shortcut' within the Function Key Settings dialog. These defaults apply to new users but will be overridden if the '<New User Default>' account at the group level has default settings already set.
- Added support to perform capitalization when using substitutions. A substituted word will be automatically capitalized if it follows a period/punctuation, is the start of a new line or paragraph or is used to start a dictation. If the auto-capitalization is not desired, a backslash can be added in the 'Written Form' field before the word in the New/Edit Substitution dialogs.
- Added support so the pound sign symbol (#) can be used when followed by a letter or a double pound sign symbol (##) can be used when followed by a number at the start of dictation.
- Made a change so that a user can continue to log into the Fusion Narrate client when shortcuts fail to load for any reason. The following message will be displayed: "Failed to load user shortcuts."
